Christmas Scrapbook Page Idea: The Joy of Toys

Oh my gosh, I am so excited. For those of you reading my blog if you haven’t looked at my Santa Was Here Christmas Scrapbook Page, check it out. I won the weekly challenge at Crop Stop. I won a $15.00 gift card to the crop stop store, so I guess it really does pay off to enter challenges, no matter what you think of your work because others may enjoy it as much as you do.

Anyways, on to today’s scrapbook page layout. This is a Christmas scrapbook page of my son opening his toys at Christmas.

This Christmas, 2009, was a very special Christmas for me and my husband. We had to relocate due to him losing his job right before the holidays and were still struggling to make ends meet. When we realized we weren’t going to have enough money for our kids at Christmas, we decided to hit the local yard sales in the area to find nice toys. The lord really blessed us. We found brand new v-tech toys, transformers and DVDs people were getting rid of because their children didn’t play with them. Our kids had the biggest Christmas yet and we didn’t spend, but maybe $50.00. The funniest part of this Christmas is the fact we didn’t have any boxes to put the toys in, so we went to the local liquor store and got boxes for the gifts. THANK GOD THEY COULDN’T READ! Haha, everyone laughed and cried, but it was such a great Christmas.

I used several different papers in this challenge, but the real treat was the cricut cuts outs I placed on the scrapbook page. I used the Joys of the Season Cricut cartridge and made the holly leaves and the garland wreaths in the top left and bottom right of the page. The garland is just a wreath I cut using the cricut and then I cut it in half.

Christmas Scrapbook Page Idea: Santa Was Here

Hello Everyone

I know I took a few weeks off, but I’m back now for the rest of the year. I decided to spend a little time with my family over the Thanksgiving break because there were so many lovely family members and friends visiting. It was a great Thanksgiving and I had a lot to be thankful for and I hope yours was as good as mine.

Now, on with the eye-candy for today’s post. This is a Christmas scrapbook page idea that I made from a sketch that was provided on the Sweet Sunday Sketch blog this week. I tweaked the sketch just a tiny bit. When you see my Christmas scrapbook page you will notice a small ornament to the right of the page, in the sketch it was supposed to be a flower of some sort. Oh, well….I guess I just wanted to be different.

I absolutely love this scrapbook page photo of my son Riley with Santa Clause. The reason why he has such as weird look on his face in because Santa caught him by surprise. Every year in December, around the second or third week of the month, the local fire department here in Richmond Hill, Georgia comes brings Santa around on the fire truck to give out candy canes to the kids in all the neighbor hoods in the area. It is so awesome. Riley was almost asleep when Santa came to visit.

I used several different Christmas scrapbook papers by several different companies to get the layered effect on the page. I cut out the circles using a fiskars circle cutter and made them look like ornaments using a cuttle bug die cut. The die cut I used was actually a decorative square punch that I cut down to look like the top of an ornament ball. The scalloped punch running next to the 2009 is a snowflake punch by Martha Stewart and the photograph of my scrapbook page doesn’t do it justice, it is beautiful.

I will also be entering this challenge into several scrapbook page challenges for the week.

Scrapbook Page Ideas: Baby Boy Scrapbook Page

This is probably one of the best scrapbook pages I’ve ever done, but hey I say that about all the pages I do. This scrapbook page layout shows pictures of my son (Riley) playing in his walker when he was about 8 months old. I used several different tools to complete the look of this page, but each can be easily replicated if you don’t have the tools needed.


The background of this page is a 12x12 sheet of cardstock in a yellow-y mustard-like color. I don’t know how to describe it. The color is a little brighter than a plain yellow, but not quite as bright as a mustard color. The green background features cute little cars and roadways, zipping and zooming all over the page. This is a We R Memory Keepers 12x12 page that I cut down to about 10x10 and placed on top of the yellow.
The pictures are 4x6 sizes that were cut down slightly to fit best and look right on the page I was creating and outlined with blue cardstock. The journaling in the bottom right-hand side of the page was typed into a circular frame on word and printed out. I then used a circular object, such as a cup or coffee can to trace the circles and then cut one out on the printer paper and then a slightly larger circle from a piece of red cardstock.

The cute little car in the top right-hand corner and the words “Play Time” listed in the left-center of the page are where you will need special tools. I created the words “Play Time” using a special font program on my computer by Creating Keepsakes. This program is great for creating really cute fonts, saving you time and energy for other things. You can easily make these fonts yourself if you have the time. Cut out blocks from white cardstock and blocks slightly bigger than the white, in  red cardstock. Glue those together and stamp or if you have good hand writing, write the letters in the white and red blocks for an actual handmade look.


The car was made using the Sizzix car stencil or die cut. The edges were perforated on the car die-cut so I was able to punch out the car in different colors, tear it apart and piece it back together with glue and in the end created a three dimensional car that is absoulutely adorable on this baby boy scrapbook page. If you are somewhat of an artist you could easily create a stencil of a car, trace it on several different colors of cardstock and then cut the pieces out to create your own unique car for this page, but the Sizzix car die cut can be purchased below if you wish to purchase one of you own. I have lots of little boy pictures with racing themes so this die-cut is worth it to me. The banner behind car I made myself just cutting strips of black and white cardstock.

Christmas Scrapbook: Christmas Cookie Recipe

Oh, this making this Christmas scrapbook was extremely fun. It didn’t take long because you try to get as many people involved as you can. This works best if you happen to be involved in a scrapbook or rubber stamping group, which Mom is. Mom is a member of an online group for paper crafting called Perfect friends. The members of that group decided to participate in a cookie swap, but instead of sharing actual home baked cookies, we made a scrapbook page with the main journaling on the page being the recipe of our favorite cookies.

The scrapbook pages are 6X6” pages, making it a small enough book so that you can place it on a shelf in your kitchen, but large enough that you can still see the recipe on the page. There were 16 women that participated in the swap and each created 16 of the same scrapbook page layouts for their cookie recipe. Most women stayed with a Christmas theme or followed a theme pertaining to their cookie. For example, the third picture is a scrapbook page created by one of the ladies in my group (Barbara Foster) and the page featured a recipe for Royal Coconut Cookies. Her page featured a hula dancer and coconut palm trees because of her cookies featuring coconuts.

The first picture is a view of the front of the recipe book, and each one was decorated based on the owner of the book. This is the front cover of mom’s which features elements needed in cooking and a touch of Christmas with the gingerbread man and holly berries.

There are so many paper and embellishment choices you can use to decorate this recipe scrapbook, so the possibilities to what you could create are almost limitless.

We used a book binding tool to bind the pages together and hold the album’s recipe together, making it even more useful in a kitchen. The only thing this recipe book needs, and I wish I would have thought about it before it was put together, was a table of contents page. A table of contents page would be great for locating a recipe quickly without having to thumb through all of the pages, but we will save that for next time.

Altered Scrapbook Using K and Company Scrapbook Paper

This is what Mom and I have been working on for the past week or actually couple of days. This is a chipboard book made by Bo Bunny that we turned into an altered scrapbook using K and Company Berry Sweet papers. It turned out so good I can’t wait to apply some of these little things to the SMASH Book I’m making.

There are six individual pages in this “Family” book to showcase your favorite memories. When mom and I take pictures now we try to think ahead of using them on certain scrapbook layouts. The pictures showcased in this family book are pictures that were miscellaneous and didn’t particularly apply to any certain layout or scrapbook page theme. Mom used any family pictures she could find: grandparents, cousins and just pictures of the family lounging about. Below is a peek inside of what the rest of Mom’s family book looks like.

So, what do you guys think about this altered scrapbook? I think it turned out great. Be on the lookout for another altered book that features the birth of my son. This altered book features everything from the baby shower to the birth and also showcases ultrasound pictures. This book is too cute and definately something you will want to make for a close friend or loved family member when another precious bundle of joy arrives.

Altered Scrapbook Ideas: Baby Book

This is an altered scrapbook that Mom and I made to celebrate the birth of my son Riley. Anything that led up to the moment of that precious baby being born is what we included in the scrapbook, and considering this is the first altered book we had created to actually serve a purpose it turned out great.

The baby image on the front of this altered book is from a clip art program from a friends computer. Several images were printed of the baby, then they were cut out and glued on top of each other for a 3-D effect. The clouds are made from foam and chalks were used to add some color and definition. Below are some more pictures of the inside of the altered baby book.

The inside pages, or scrapbook layouts, were created using mainly stickers to hold the pictures in place and a little pop of color underneath each photo using a little bit of colored card-stock to make each photograph pop out. On other pages featured in this album there are page clips and pocket folders for keeping baby announcements or ultrasound pictures in the album and not falling out.

Mom also created another altered book this week using a Bo Bunny chipboard book that spells “Family” and the “Berry Sweet” collection of paper from K and Company.

Scrapbook Ideas: Christmas Ornaments Made From Scrapbook Paper

This week I have been writing or focusing on other items or crafts that you can make using your scrapbooking supplies or scrapbook paper. You can also create unique Christmas ornaments from scrapbook paper in several different ways. Some ornaments are more complicated than others and may require more tools or supplies than just paper, but the for a little added effort the end results are sure worth it.

Aren’t these just the cutest little hand-made ornaments you have ever seen? I couldn’t believe that these were actually made from paper when Mom first showed them to me, but they are. One looks like a traditional round ornament that you would find on a Christmas tree (done with tea bagging technique, but can be done just the same with scrapbook paper) in any home and the other looks like a little gingerbread or bird house, perfect for those who have a theme to their trees. These ornaments can be made for a tree anytime of the year. I know some crafters who have trees as dinning room center pieces that decorate them for every season or holiday throughout the year. These would be perfect ornaments to put on those trees and they don’t cost an arm and a leg nor do they take a lot of time to create. The Stampin’ Chic Blog has a very cute scrapbook paper ornament that is so simple you can get your children involved HERE. You will want to give these to all of your holiday party guests.

Scrapbooking Ideas: Scrapbook Page Christmas Baskets

Chances are you’ve seen the baskets I’m talking about and think that only bored little old ladies create them, but that simply isn’t true. Most of the time these scrapbook page baskets are a way to repurpose and reuse greeting cards sent out at Christmas time. I always get tickled when Mom makes these little baskets cause they are very cute and great for organization, but I can’t help but think that people make these or reuse the cards so someone doesn’t get upset because you threw their greeting card in the trash or in a recycling bin. LOL!
You can easily make these baskets to work for anything theme using the same pattern and technique, but instead of using greeting cards just use the thick cardstock-like patterned scrapbook paper. Create these baskets to decorate for a birthday party with items you already have or a wedding and place party favors or candy for guests to grab on their way out as a thank you gift. Mom and I have made several of these for other people and she kept one for herself, here is a picture of one below.

ITEMS NEEDED:

• 14 Cards
• Glue
• Yarn and Needle
• Awl

This is a list of items needed if you are creating a card basket, but can easily be adjusted if you are using scrapbook paper. The awl at the bottom of the list is to punch the holes into the thick cardstock. I’m sure you’re thinking…”why not use a hole punch?” Well the holes only need to be big enough for the thread to get through. Making Memories has a tool kit available that has smaller tools in one convenient place that you may use while you’re doing any type of paper crafts. This kit includes a setting tool, a hammer, an awl, needles, tweezers, pliers and a setting mat all in a small compact case. The great thing about this kit is that the tools are not cheaply made, it’s easy to store in any craft bag or sit on a desk and the tools all have their own place in the case.

Echo Park paper company has two of the most adorable paper for those readers who would love to make these for Christmas. The picture here is of my favorite collection by Echo Park, Everybody Loves Christmas that will be sure to warm your heart and the receiver of this wonderful gift.

Scrapbook Page Layout Tips For Beginners

When I was first starting to get the scrapbook bug I was so overwhelmed with the amount of projects available that I often had a hard time focusing my time and energy. I would start four or five different pages,  but finish none of them. When putting together a scrapbook page or set of pages as a beginner there are a few tried and true pointers to help you stay on track. Here are a list of tips to help you make the most of your time and create beautiful scrapbook page layouts when you are first starting out as a scrapbook-aholic.

1. Organization
2. Acid Free and Lignin Free
3. Shop Simple

Organization-
Organization will help you make the most of your time when you are creating a new scrapbook page or continuing an old layout. Everything, let me say that again....EVERYTHING should be organized: photographs, embellishments and tools so you always know where things are when you need them.

Acid Free and Lignin Free-
Any products you use on your pictures such as stickers, pens and glue adhesives should be acid free. These acid free products prevent damage to your photographs and don't cause them to brown or yellow with age in a scrapbook.

Shop Simple-
Only buy the basics when you are first beginning a scrapbook...there's no need to go overboard. As you get more comfortable with the idea and concept of scrapbooking then gradually add more tools and supplies to your collection. Scrapbook Layouts: Halloween Challenge Page

This is Mom’s challenge page and she was so excited about this scrapbook page, not to mention it turned out fantastic. Mom’s Halloween scrapbook page layout came together very quickly, which is unusual for her. She says doing these challenges helps her focus in one area instead of trying to decide what to work on, the challenge makes that call for you. Mom incorporated all of her elements into the page that she drew and the paisley pattern she blended in nicely with the page by cutting out paisley birds with a FISKARS PAISLEY PAPER PUNCH and using paisley printed paper from K & Company. Scrapbook Challenge

Mom and I have decided to motivate ourselves to create more unique scrapbook pages and layouts. We haven't decided if we will do a scrapbooking challenge every week or every other week, but we are very motivated and excited to share with you what we will be working on. At the end of this article I will announce what are challenge will be for this week.

Mom and I were sitting around the table today at lunch and we were talking about ways to get us motivated to try new things. We were reading about some other challenges on blogs that we like to visit, such as the Just Rite blog that post new challenges every couple of weeks to get those brain juices flowing. That's when I came up with the bright idea to create our own challenge. Mom and I first made a list of 10 scrapbook page themes and a list of 10 different colors. We cut out each theme and color so it was on a strip of paper and folded each in half. We placed the themes in one bowl and the colors in the other.

Here is us drawing our pieces of paper from each bowl. We were to choose one strip of paper out of the theme bowl and two strips of paper from the color bowl.  After choosing the theme and colors I told mom that we needed to utilize some of the numerous tools and embellishments she had by different companies. So we created two more categories. One for tools and embellishments and the other for certain companies. After placing the strips of paper into a bowl we took one strip of paper from each bowl.

 

Rules of the Challenge:

1. Challenges must be complete by next Friday
2. Scrapbook layouts may incorporate other embellishments, colors or tools but must be minimal. The bulk of the page should consist of the items or themes listed on the strips of paper drawn. 
3. The theme of the page can not be changed ,however; three of the other four items on the strips of paper can be used. If a contestant (Mom and I) choose to use all five of the items listed on our strips of paper we only get brownie points. LOL!
4. HAVE FUN SCRAPBOOKING!

K and Company Wedding Scrapbook Page: Black and White

Scrapbook Page Instructions:
This is one of my favorite scrapbook pages made by my mom, but the page also features products from my favorite scrapbook company, K & Company. As I said in a previous post my sister is getting married in July so we are creating a scrapbook to give to her as a wedding gift. Some of the scrapbook layouts we are creating will have pictures in them, but a few pages we are creating specifically for her wedding pictures, even though they haven’t been taken yet. This wedding scrapbook page has a black and white theme, but are not the colors chosen for the wedding party. We have also created a wedding scrapbook page dedicated to her wedding colors which are purple and a shade of olive green. That page will be posted later on this week, Mom and I aren’t completely satisfied with its (the new wedding page) appearance yet.

The left page background is a ivory and black specialty paper from K and Company. This paper is also featured as a small bordering piece on the right side of the opposite page. The heart shaped picture holders on the left page were made using a heart cuttlebug embossing and cutting folder and ivory white cardstock. The background behind the heart-shaped photograph holders uses black cardstock. In the bottom right corner of the left layout are two hearts. These hearts were hearts created using the same heart cuttlebug embossing and cutting folder. At the top right corner of this page is a small place to journal with a date or the name of the couple getting married, in this case my sister and her soon to be hubby.

The right page is a very simple page, but looks very elegant, perfect for a wedding scrapbook page. There isn’t a special technique, special tool or special product used on this page; just regular ivory and black cardstock, a silver quote brad and two pearl embellishments on each side of the silver brad quote.The stamped image on the side of this page is a Anna Griffin stamp that is absolutely beautiful.

Scrapbook How To: Antique Victorian Scrapbook Page

Thoughts on the layout:
This is a one-page scrapbook layout with a lot of different options, and of course made by me (Jessica) because I don’t like to do two-page layouts. The type of photos that would look best on this scrapbook background are black and white, antique, outdoor pictures or for dress-up and tea party pictures. This scrapbook page is recommended for intermediate and advanced scrapbookers because of the time it takes to complete, the amount of products used and the cost involved with acquiring the products used because buying them all at one time can be EXPENSIVE!
P.S. Overlook the missing button in the top left corner on my scrapbook page. I didn’t realize it was missing until after this post was uploaded. Ooops.

What I Used and How I Used It:
The main background of this Victorian-styled scrapbook page is a 12x12 of light blue cardstock. Now, we will start from the left side of the layout. The floral paper on the left side is a strip of scrapbook background paper made by Chatter Box Inc. It’s hard to see on the picture, but three punched and embossed flowers are pressed into the floral paper. This is a flower punch from one of Martha Stewart’s punch collections. The flower looks like it is casting a shadow because the main background paper peaks out underneath. In the center of the flowers are small blue buttons. The Chatter Box paper is nice, but there is a set with multiple floral papers that are very nice as well called Plaid Paper Journey's "American Florals" Paper Collection Scrapbook Paper

The mauve strip next to floral design has a lot of different, but useful options for this page. I always leave room for options on my scrapbook pages just in case I change my mind about what I would like to put their later. The strip can be used to attach mementos from the event, journaling entries or you can add more embellishments. This mauve strip was cut from cardstock about 2 inches in width. The pearl embellishments are Brown Faux Pearls made by Color Stories.
The gray squares are cut to hold your pictures. These were pre-cut 4x6 inch pieces of cardstock, but I re-cut them to 4x4 (totally my choice, you could make them bigger or smaller).
The purple background is a piece of 12x12 cardstock I cut to fit just a little inside the main light blue background, but I can’t remember the exact size, it took several tries. (Next time I'll try to remember those measurements.) The floral border design around the edges is also a Martha Stewart punch, specifically made for creating boarders.
The quotes on my page are very meaningful. Since you can’t see them in the picture here’s what they say….
“Laughter is a gift everyone should open.”
“Life is better when it’s fun.”
“Joy is the feeling of grinning on the inside.”
The quotes on my page are written in a very beautiful font on a clear, bubble-like sticker made by Cloud 9 Design. The stickers were then placed on small pieces of mauve cardstock cut slightly bigger than the stickers themselves.
The floral embellishment stickers in the two corners on the right side of the scrapbook layout really make this page POP! You could easily created your own personalized die-cut stickers, but if you don’t have the tools to do it with these are much easier. The floral embellishments are made Sandylion Essentials and are cute enough to use on all kinds of scrapbook pages you create. Sandylion also creates another set of stickers that would look good as well called Sandylion Dimensional Stickers - Sunburst Flowers
