Scrapbook Page Challenge: Playing in the Mud

This week I decided to enter a scrapbook challenge at The Color Throw down Blog. The challenge was to create a scrapbook page or card using three specific colors: old olive, baja breeze and crumb cake. I decided to use some pictures of me and the kids playing in the mud after a rainstorm. It actually turned out better than I thought.

I struggled with this challenge believe it or not. I don’t usually choose colors like this and because I struggled with the colors I struggled with putting the page together. That is the reason I picked this challenge this week, it got me out of my comfort zone and I am very pleased with the results of my scrapbook page creation.

I think the page turned out really, really well. All of the scrapbook page embellishments are made using the cricut cutter. I made the letter “M” using the “Day at the Zoo” cricut cartridge and the brown background that looks like a mud puddle behind the pictures is a border from the cricut cartridge “Paper Lace”.

The “day at the zoo” cartridge has really cute lettering as well as cut outs for animals. The “paper lace” cartridge is very feminine and elegant, a great choice for girly pages.

The letters that spell “mud” are chipboard letters and give the page a nice three-dimensional or raised effect. I’ve been wanting to use these pictures for awhile and struggled with a color scheme to use, but I think that this turned out really nice. Let me know what you guys think.

Scrapbook Challenge: Anything Goes – Purple Baby Girl Scrapbook Page

I had so much fun with the challenge this week. The challenge is for the Come and Get It blog and since it is the 5th week of the month you can make whatever you want – anything goes. I had some beautiful baby girl photos that I’ve been wanting to scrapbook, so I thought….”Why not kill two birds with one stone.” Here is my challenge scrapbook page entry

 

Isn’t this such a beautiful page. Sometimes I think that less is really more. I see so many cluttered scrapbook pages and while some look nice, others are so cluttered you forget that you are really supposed to be looking at the picture, not the embellishments. The papers I used are K&Company. I draped purple and black ribbon across the bottom portion of the page and the purple on the tag at the bottom is a plum colored paint chip. So run to your local hardware store ladies, you can use those colored paint strips for scrapbooking.

Scrapbook Page Ideas: Baby Boy Scrapbook Page

This is probably one of the best scrapbook pages I’ve ever done, but hey I say that about all the pages I do. This scrapbook page layout shows pictures of my son (Riley) playing in his walker when he was about 8 months old. I used several different tools to complete the look of this page, but each can be easily replicated if you don’t have the tools needed.


The background of this page is a 12x12 sheet of cardstock in a yellow-y mustard-like color. I don’t know how to describe it. The color is a little brighter than a plain yellow, but not quite as bright as a mustard color. The green background features cute little cars and roadways, zipping and zooming all over the page. This is a We R Memory Keepers 12x12 page that I cut down to about 10x10 and placed on top of the yellow.
The pictures are 4x6 sizes that were cut down slightly to fit best and look right on the page I was creating and outlined with blue cardstock. The journaling in the bottom right-hand side of the page was typed into a circular frame on word and printed out. I then used a circular object, such as a cup or coffee can to trace the circles and then cut one out on the printer paper and then a slightly larger circle from a piece of red cardstock.

The cute little car in the top right-hand corner and the words “Play Time” listed in the left-center of the page are where you will need special tools. I created the words “Play Time” using a special font program on my computer by Creating Keepsakes. This program is great for creating really cute fonts, saving you time and energy for other things. You can easily make these fonts yourself if you have the time. Cut out blocks from white cardstock and blocks slightly bigger than the white, in  red cardstock. Glue those together and stamp or if you have good hand writing, write the letters in the white and red blocks for an actual handmade look.


The car was made using the Sizzix car stencil or die cut. The edges were perforated on the car die-cut so I was able to punch out the car in different colors, tear it apart and piece it back together with glue and in the end created a three dimensional car that is absoulutely adorable on this baby boy scrapbook page. If you are somewhat of an artist you could easily create a stencil of a car, trace it on several different colors of cardstock and then cut the pieces out to create your own unique car for this page, but the Sizzix car die cut can be purchased below if you wish to purchase one of you own. I have lots of little boy pictures with racing themes so this die-cut is worth it to me. The banner behind car I made myself just cutting strips of black and white cardstock.

Christmas Scrapbook: Christmas Cookie Recipe

Oh, this making this Christmas scrapbook was extremely fun. It didn’t take long because you try to get as many people involved as you can. This works best if you happen to be involved in a scrapbook or rubber stamping group, which Mom is. Mom is a member of an online group for paper crafting called Perfect friends. The members of that group decided to participate in a cookie swap, but instead of sharing actual home baked cookies, we made a scrapbook page with the main journaling on the page being the recipe of our favorite cookies.

The scrapbook pages are 6X6” pages, making it a small enough book so that you can place it on a shelf in your kitchen, but large enough that you can still see the recipe on the page. There were 16 women that participated in the swap and each created 16 of the same scrapbook page layouts for their cookie recipe. Most women stayed with a Christmas theme or followed a theme pertaining to their cookie. For example, the third picture is a scrapbook page created by one of the ladies in my group (Barbara Foster) and the page featured a recipe for Royal Coconut Cookies. Her page featured a hula dancer and coconut palm trees because of her cookies featuring coconuts.

The first picture is a view of the front of the recipe book, and each one was decorated based on the owner of the book. This is the front cover of mom’s which features elements needed in cooking and a touch of Christmas with the gingerbread man and holly berries.

There are so many paper and embellishment choices you can use to decorate this recipe scrapbook, so the possibilities to what you could create are almost limitless.

We used a book binding tool to bind the pages together and hold the album’s recipe together, making it even more useful in a kitchen. The only thing this recipe book needs, and I wish I would have thought about it before it was put together, was a table of contents page. A table of contents page would be great for locating a recipe quickly without having to thumb through all of the pages, but we will save that for next time.

Homemade Card Making: Let It Snow Christmas Card

Mom and I figured since the website was called scrapbooks and keepsakes, that we should showcase other items on our blog besides just scrapbook pages, which can get boring since we tend to work on various paper crafts from time to time. This card is the first homemade greeting card I’ve ever made and I am so proud of it. I love snowflakes, they are so beautiful and that is where I got my inspiration for this card.

 

 

Do the color schemes of these relaxing blues make you think of curling up by the fire with a blanket and a warm cup of cocoa on a snowy day in December? I didn’t struggle with this homemade card like I thought I would, even though it was my first attempt. The only thing that reminded me of the Christmas holidays were the rubber stamps I selected from our Christmas/Winter selection. The rubber stamps actually came from a dollar store called the Mighty Dollar in the North Carolina area and the scrapbook selection in this store is out of this world. The Mighty Dollar features tons of products from K&Company as well as Making Memories, which is who created these stamps. The small snowflake stamps dipped in the darker ink were clear-acrylic un-mounted stamps that I randomly placed on a medium sized block, to create a one of a kind image using several stamps from different making memories Christmas and winter stamp collections. The larger snowflake in the center was stamped in embossing adhesive with a light blue embossing powder added to the adhesive. Some of the snowflakes have some glitter glue to add a little more on the card. The let it snow at the bottom of the page is stamped in the same color blue as the snowflakes and is also a stamp I found in one of the Making Memory stamp collections I found at the dollar store Mighty Dollar.

The inside of my card features a blue stamped image that says “Merry Christmas” in cursive on white cardstock and features the same blue polka dot scrapbook paper behind it as the front of my homemade card.

This card is a great choice for beginners that have embossing tools; however, someone that wishes to focus on card making, but doesn’t have the embossing tools can simply stamp the center snowflake in a light blue ink.

I know a lot of paper craft creators are starting to focus on digital scrapbooking and digital paper crafts, but it’s still not the same as creating the gift completely with your hands and makes it more personal.

So go ahead and get a jump start on your Christmas card mailing list and start making those homemade greeting cards now. This card can be done in a matter of a few minutes, making it a perfect homemade card choice for those with a long mailing list for the holidays. Friends and family will be calling you all holiday season, thanking you for this beautiful holiday card that they receive in the mail.
